Burning Steamer Beached

Chicago, Dec. 6. -- After a race with fire the propeller, George W. Morley, was run aground of the foot of Davis Street, Evanston, early last night. The crew of fourteen escaped to the shore in their boat and rescuing craft taken out by the life savers. The members of the crew were: Captain James Owen Bay City Mich: Mate P. McGannon, 517 Twenty-eighth street, Chicago; Chief Enginer, John Chapman, Buffalo; second engineer, Alex Wilson, Detroit, Firemen, Michael Welch and Patrick Murphy, Wheelmen Charles Watson, Buffalo; Frank Moore, Milwaukee; Deck hands, John Burns, Ashland, Wis. Tom Martin; Charles Lyons, Cheboygan, Mich. Watchman, John Moore; coal passers, Richard Burns and Michael Walsh.

The fires started when the Morley was seven miles off Evanston, early in the evening. In a few minutes it was seen that the flames had made too great headway for the men to put them out. The bow of the boat was pointed towards the Evanston shore and a full head of steam was put on.

The George W. Morley, owned by Hawgood and Avery of Cleveland, was built in 1888 at West Bay City Mich. It was insured for $30,000.

December is proving a bad month for the underwriters. An examination today of the steamer George W. Morley, which burned at Evanston last night, showed there was nothing worth saving, even the machinery is not worth the salvage of getting it out of the water. A loss of not less than $30,000 is estimated on the steamer Rosedale, ashore on Charity shoals, Lake Ontario. The Masten is a total loss of Twin River Point. It is doubtful if the underwriters will take the trouble of sending an inspector to the sunken vessel.
