The steel package freighter NORTH LAKE was built by the St. Clair yards of the Great Lakes Engineering Works In 1909* She was one of three Identical sister vessels, the others being the NORTH SEA and NORTH STAR. They were operated by the Mutual Transit Company of Buffalo for the Northern Steamship Company which in turn was a subsidiary of the Great Northern - Northern Pacific Railway System. Their dimensions were 350 x V6 x 31? 3*861 gross tons; 2,9^1 net. Quadruple expansion engines of 19", 27ir*, ^0", and 58" dia. by V2" stroke. NORTH LAKE passed into Great Lakes Transit Corporation along with most of the other package freighters in 1912. In 1926 she was renamed J.E. GORMAN. In 19^2 she was requisitioned by the U.S. War Shipping Administration, stripped of her superstructure and taken to salt water via the Illinois Waterway and the Mississippi. During the war, she worked in the North Pacific area mostly. She was sold to Panamanian owners around 19*+7 and eventually renamed ADELAIDE. She was scrapped in Japan in 1953* Our illustration below shows her In her original appearance.
