144 Telescope GREAT LAKES MARITIME INSTITUTE, INC. The Great Lakes Maritime Institute was organized in 1952 as the Great Lakes Model Shipbuilders' Guild. Its primary purpose at that time was the promotion of the building of models of Great Lakes vessels. Since THEN THE ORGANIZATIONS SCOPE OF INTEREST HAS BEEN WIDENED CONSIDERABLY. AND THE MONTHLY PUBLICATION TELESCOPE INCLUDES ARTICLES ON HISTORY, SALVAGE, CURRENT NEWS, AND MODEL BU I LD I NG AS WELL . THE BUILDING OF MODELS REMAIN ONE OF THE MAIN PROJECTS OF THE INSTITUTE, AND THE ORGANIZATION HAS CREATED THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF GREAT LAKES SCALE MODELS.
