Lake historians working with second-hand knowledge have difficulty giving life and accuracy to their subject or finding a receptive audience. This has been particularly true of the field of lake commercial sailing vessels. Extinct now for about three decades, merchant sail has a tiny and dwindling number of first-hand chroniclers, and finds few new historians to take up its story. This shows how deeply we must feel the passing of John Miller, which took place this past June after a year's illness. Jack was among the best of this small but invaluable circle of friends of merchant sail. Jack was also very generous to both the Institute and Dossin Museum. He was one of three who signed the Institute's first charter when it was founded a decade ago as the Great Lakes Model Shipbuilders' Guild. (The others were Captain Johnston and Bob Davison.) Jack generously enriched the darkroom and photo collection of the museum, and strongly promoted the preservation of the "Huron boat" ANNA S. PIGGOTT, now owned by the Institute and leased to the Trenton Sea Scouts. Jack also contributed heartily in articles and illustrations for pages of Telescope. In these many ways, we shall miss him.
