The Maggie Duncan was built in 1890 at Fort Howard Wis.; 535 gross tons; 164 x 31. Listed Ship Masters' Assoc. Directory, 1903; also Inland Lloyds Register, 1902 and 1893, when it was owned by Samuel Neff & Son Sidney. It was operated by the Neff firm from 1893 until 1896. When Chicago paved its streets with cedar blocks, Capt. Sam Neff often loaded the Duncan with lumber while at anchor off Brevoort River, Mich. The cedar posts were loaded from rafts. An alligator, a land-water boat used in the lumbering trade (shown at right) helped move the logs from shore to water.
