Notes
Owned by the U.S.Corps of Engineers, & sailed for 13 years by Capt. Edwin M.Neff on the Fox river and Lake Winnebago, Wis. Built by the Ryan Bros., Oshkosh, in 1879; 130' long, 28' wide, 6' deep; had two horizontal engines, 14" x 48" and two 42" x 12' boilers; sold to Kaukauna man in 1894, and ended its career as a barge at Fort William, Ont. Although it was Capt. E.M.Neff who commanded the Henrietta it is his brother, Capt. W. W. Neff, who has been credited, rightly or wrongly, with taking the vessel all the way from Oshkosh to the Fond du Lac river in Duluth, Minn., through the rough waters of Lake Superior. The boat was a stern wheeler, built low to the water, and the voyage was considered a real feat of seamanship.
