- The keel for the steamer, Ida E. was laid in the fall of 1886 at the Morse yard, Oshkosh, Wis. James & George Ryan built the boat for Capt. Sam Neff, who bent the steam plank on the vessel. His son, Charles S.Neff ran the steam box boiler on Saturdays; sold upon completion for $18,000 to the Manistee Salt & Lumber Co. Listed Inland Lloyds Vessel Register,1893;Ship Masters' Assoc. Dir.,1903. The building of the Ida E. was a fine sight for Oshkosh; even women ventured into the yard to watch. The Ida E.'s account book, kept by Sidney O.Neff, lists the names of the carpenters & their wages, & itemizes the amounts & costs of all lumber & fittings.
