Captain Samuel Neff was one of the three sons of Orrin Neff and Cynthia (Phillips) Neff, all of whom became boatmen on Wisconsin' s river and waterway systems in the early 1850S, settling at Oshkosh, Wis. ,after migrating from New York state. They were Capt. Edwin Marion Neff, Capt. W. W. Neff and Capt. Samuel Neff, born 31 March 1842, New Lisbon, N.Y. The family had been preceded in Wisconsin by Abel Neff, a brother of Orrin Neff. Captain Samuel owned same 40 or so vessels during his career. He died 21 Feb.1904, Milwaukee, Wis. His sons, Sidney Orrin Neff and Charles Samuel Neff, were associated with him in the Samuel Neff & Sons company. The Neff family had settled in Massachusetts in the 1640s.
