The barge, Sidney O. Neff was built at Manitowoc, Wis. during the fall of 1890 and into 1891 for Capt.Sam Neff & Sons. It was 149 feet long, 30 feet wide and 10 feet in depth; 435 gross tons; 350 h.p.; carried crew of 11. The details of the building of the barge, and its operation until her sale in May of 1898 may be found in the Neff & Sons account books. Listed Beers,History of the Great Lakes, Vol. 1, p.865; Inland Lloyds Vessel Register, 1893, and in the various Ship Masters' Assoc. Directories, 1903 and on. The barge was converted to a steamer after 1898.
