Notes
Capt. Sam Neff's first vessel; he sailed it alone when he was about 15 years old, or younger. The sloop was moulded-built, about 35 feet long, 12 wide and draft-loaded, 3 feet in depth. Had a large cargo hatch, with cover -cockpit aft; no cabin. Purchased about 1855 with $35 cash made by ferrying a calf owned by his father, Orrin Neff. The boat was used carrying cord wood, supplies, and general freighting on Lake Winnebago and the Wolf river; had a main sail, jib, rudder & tiller. Purchased at Oshkosh & sold there about 1858. Believed to have sailed many years on the lakes, "but we do not know where she went." Sam tacked the boat all night on Lake Winnebago in a severe storm, with St.Elmo's fire on his masthead.
