The Metacomet, of Milwaukee, Wis. ran for many years between Escanaba and Milwaukee; carried ore and coal. The Inland Lloyds Vessel Register, 1893, p. 68, says the vessel was built at Detroit in 1880. Beers, in The History of the Great Lakes, Vol. l, p.858, notes that the Metacomet was a schooner of 852 gross tons; was formerly called the Iron State, and was chartered for ocean service in 1898.
