The forward cabins were removed from their original location abaft the forecastle on the spar deck mounted between two hatches, and placed directly atop the forecastle, thereby opening extra deck space. All original hatches were removed and four new large hatch openings were cut into the deck. Additional carrying capacity was also created by extending the after hold into the former coal bunker area. Two new diesel-powered 45 ton cranes, each fitted with a 90-foot boom, were acquired from Clyde Iron Works in Duluth, and mounted onto special rails that ran the entire length of the main deck. Major modifications also included reconstruction of the fantail, where a "V"-type notch arrangement was installed to facilitate pushing of the barge with a tug. Retaining most of the original living quarters, a new and somewhat squatter smokestack was mounted atop the after cabins. The barge was christened Marquis Roen, in honor of the Captain's son who was Outbound at Milwaukee in October, 1969, the ROEN had just finished unloading a cargo of cement. Author's Coll.
