Steamboats and Sailors of the Great Lakes by Mark Thompson gives an overall history of shipping over the past 300 years and brings us up to date on the drastic changes that occurred during the 1980s. Employed by the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City, Mark lectured on the various aspects of shipping that included the entire waterway system, the economics of vessel owners and life aboard freighters. Armchair sailors will appreciate the behind the scenes look at an industry that is constantly changing to survive. The 232-page book sells for $29.95. Shipwrecks of the Straits of Mackinac by Dr. Charles and Jeri Feltner provides information on this crossroads section of the Lakes. The authors have published several articles on these wrecks in various marine journals and they are all included in this book. Both diver and non-diver will find this book extremely useful in the background information on these wrecks. The book is divided into chapters on discovered and undiscovered wrecks and extensive vessel statistics are provided for both categories. The later chapters cover the Straits Bottom Land Preserve, a glossary of vessel terms and an excellent bibliography of sources for those interested in researching wrecks. The hardcover version costs $29.95 and softcover is $17.95. Namesakes of the '90's by John Greenwood replaces Namesakes of the '80's with an updated list of fifty-four operating fleets. During the 1980's, several fleets disbanded and their vessels were renamed. Many of the newer ships were builtfor Lakes and ocean service. This latest edition in the Namesakes series provides photos of the vessels in their current fleet colors and their histories. This hardcover books sells for $23.00. The cover painting by Robert McGreevy illustrates the Atlantic in the Detroit River passing under the dome of the Michigan Central Railroad Depot. 140 years after her collision with the propeller Ogdensburg, the steamer Atlantic will again be the center of controversy. This summer, an american salvage company, despite objections from the Ontario government, will recover artifacts from the sunken vessel.
