United States District Judge Robert Holmes Bell of Grand Rapids ruled that there's "overwhelming" evidence that the skipper of the CAPTAIN LAWRENCE abandoned his ship after it was destroyed during a storm in 1933. The ruling means the shipwreck belongs to the State of Michigan. Fairport International Exploration claimed they had acquired salvage rights to the CAPTAIN LAWRENCE from the survivors of the former captain, Wilfred Behrens.
