She departed Port Huron today for her new home in Detroit and tied up at Harbor Hill Marina a few hours later. As part of the high school she will be used as a research platform to teach students about the impact of industry and everyday living on the water. Nov 16 ... The salty RANGINVI was renamed BBC GERMANY while in Milwaukee. She passed down the Welland Canal under her new name on November 20. ... Canada Steamship Lines ATLANTIC HURON arrived at the Pascol Shipyard in Thunder Bay and was placed on the drydock for repairs to her kort nozzle.She was assisted by the tugs PENINSULA & DONALD MAC. She was removed from the drydock on November 29. ... Port Huron's only overseas terminal was destroyed by a fire that took 12 hours to extinguish. The fire was believed to have started by spontaneous combustion in 8,500 tons of com in the terminal. The com was to be shipped to Ireland as cattle feed on November 21. Damage was estimated at $1 million to the building and $1 million for the loss of the com pellets. What was left of the building was tom down the next day. ... The Purvis Marine tug SCOTT PURVIS and barge PML 357 took sections of the upper works from the former Coast Guard Buoy Tender ASPEN up to the Purvis West Dock for final scrapping. The ASPEN was purchased by Jack Purvis and towed from Alpena to the Soo sometime in October. She was placed on the east side of the Purvis Marine Dock next the barge PML SALVAGER. They are using the crane from the SALVAGER to remove the sections. The ASPEN was built in 1906 by Craig Shipbuilding in Toledo for the United States Lighthouse Service as HULL #104.
