Page 3 DETROIT HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWS Saturday, April 24 -- Exhibit Opening Special Programming In celebration of the Dossin Great Lakes Museum's 50th Anniversary, we will host John Polacsek, former curator of the museum for 30 years, as he presents slides and stories showcasing the museum's history. He will have two 30-minute presentations at 1 and 2 p.m. -- plan to stay for both presentations so that you don't miss anything! $5 for adults and $3 for children. Sunday, April 25 -- Third Annual Dossin Great Lakes Museum Regatta Another year of racing brings new competition for the Detroit Rowing Club, as St. John's Jesuit and St. Ursula from Toledo, Ohio compete for the trophy. Join us at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for indoor rowing demonstrations. At 12:15 p.m., the races will begin, and you'll have prime viewing from DeRoy Hall. Friday, April 30 - Annual Dossin Gala Celebrate 50 years of the Dossin Great Lakes Museum and enjoy a strolling dinner, entertainment, silent auction and casino-style games at this wonderful event, which takes place from 6-10 p.m. This event is hosted by the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority. "High Roller" tickets are $200/person, with "Shark" level tickets at $150 and "Snapper" level (for Society friends 35 and under) at $100. Cocktail attire is requested. The new exhibit at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, Life on a Long Ship: Great Lakes Sailors life on a long ship: might help satisfy that yearning. Great Labes Sailors o r J j o This exhibit transports visitors inside a typical lake boat for a look into the lives of individuals who make their living on the Great Lakes. You will view a bridge deck and find out what a ship's captain does, and how that job has changed over the years. Similarly, learn about wheelsmen, mates, porters, engineers, lookouts, oilers and deck hands.
