10 MARINE REVIEW. Obstructions in South Passage, Lake Erie. In the Review of the 6th inst., Wm. T. Blunt, assistant to Col. Jared A. Smith, United States engineer at Cleveland, furnished infor- mation regarding the location of a shoal found recently in the south passage, Lake Erie. Mr. Blunt now favors us with a map of the locality, and in a letter accompanying it he says: '"'T may add to the map the following notes, as of immediate inter- phasized that there are undoubtedly many boulders scattered about these waters, sufficiently dangerous to at least cause masters to use great caution. As Capt. Lemay seemed doubtful of having been so far north and east, the search was con- tinued for some time after the 11-foot +eef was found. The locality indicated by Capt. Lemay was carefully swept, over some 5,000,000 square feet area, and many unlocated and drifting sweeps were made at random when weather would not allow for regular work. This area comprises an exceedingly small portion of the waters of the pass- age, and yet there were found within it three boulders with 17 to 18 feet over them, and located in 20 to 21 feet of water. One of these is but 10 feet square, and the others 20 feet and each isolated in a smooth In a letter to the Dry Dock Engine Works of Detroit, Walter E. Campbell, president and manager of the Detroit, Belle Isle & Wind sor Ferry Co., says: "We ran our steamer Pleasure during 1894 with natural draft and during 1895 with the Howden system of hot draft put in by your firm. The saving of fuel in 1895 was 210 pounds of coal for every running hour throughout the season. We had also a full complement of steam at all times and were enabled to use cheaper grade of coal than that which we used in 1894."' The Nickel Plate Road sells excursion tickets to the G. A. R.
