The thirty bulk freighters range from 5,500 to 12,000 tons carrying capacity, one of them being 5,500 tons, three of them 6,500 tons, six of them 7,000 tons, three of them 9,000 tons, nine of them 10,000 as though this prodigality of orders was overstepping the mark. Probably in no other single way is the great prosperity that the country is now enjoying better reflected than tons, one 11,000 tons and seven of ican Ship Building Co., of which nine- them 12,000 tons. The total carrying teen are bulk freighters, the other two being the passenger boat' and car ferry mentioned; seven will be built at the yards of the Great Lakes En- gineering Works, Detroit; three at the yard of the Toledo Ship Building Co., Toledo, and one at the yard of the capacity on a single trip is 280,000 gross tons, or conservatively 5,600,000 tons in an average season. Nor is this all. Other contracts for vessels are pending. On the face of it it would appear by this table. This enormous equip- ment is called into being to meet the country's demand for iron. The pro- gram in itself provides work not only for the tens of thousands in the ship
