the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Co. The complete success of the Scher- zer rolling lift bridge constructed for the Newburgh & South Shore Railway Co. induced the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Co. to decide to remove their center-pier swing bridge and replace the same with a double-track bridge of the Scherzer type to accommodate the rapidly increasing traffic of the railroad company. The new bridge is virtually of the same dimensions as the Newburgh & South Shore Railway Co.'s bridge, the principal difference being in the method of counterweight- ing. In the latter bridge the counter- weight consists of a concrete composi- tion enclosed and protected by steel plates. The bridge consists' of a sim- ple truss, the movable span being 160 ft. center to center of bearings. It is designed to carry the heaviest modern railroad loadings. It. is operated by electric motors. Fig. 1, herewith, shows the bridge during erection while nearing comple- tion. It was erected in the upright position. The bridge in the foreground is the Newburgh & South Shore Rail- way Co.'s bridge, in the closed posi- tion, The new Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Co.'s bridge was placei in service in September, 1906. The bridge was constructed under the charge of Mr. J. E. Greiner, as- sistant chief engineer of the Baltimore & Ohio system. The Scherzer Roll- ing Lift Bridge Co., of Chicago, fur- nished the designs, plans and speci'i- cations' for the superstructure, operat- ing machinery and operating ¢quip- ment, also furnishing consulting engi- neering services. The King Bridge Co., of Cleveland, were the contractors fur the superstructure. A duplicate of this Scherzer rolling lift bridge is now being constructed for the government railways at | Port Soudan, Africa. Two similar double-track Scherzer rolling lift bridges are being constructed for the Buenos Avres Great Southern railway at Buenos Ayres, Argentine Republic; also . long span double-leaf bridge for the Bieaia railways', India. The New York, Chicago & St: Louis Railway Co. are also constructing a similar double-track Scherzer rolling lift bridge across the Cuyahoga r.ver at Cleveland to take the plave of a single-track swing bridge on their main lines through the city of Cleveland. The base of rail of this bridge will be 70 ft. above the river. Only a partial opening of the new bridge. will. there- fore be required for even the tallest masted vssels. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Co. is constructing a very long span sin- "TAE. MaRINE. REVIEW gle-leaf Scherzer rolling lift bridge to take the place of a center-pier swing bridge across the old channel of the Cuyahoga river. The new bridge is be- ing erected in its open position and does not interfere with or delay either the railroad or vessel traffic through the old swing bridge. The new bridge is rapidly nearing completion and when completed will be closed and placed in service without any delay to: the rail- road or water traffic. The movable span of this bridge is 230 ft. long, measured from center to center of bearings. The general design and dimensions are shown in Fig. 2, herewith. It is the longest span sin- gle-leaf bascule bridge yet constructed. It is only exceeded in length of span by the double-leaf Scherzer rolling lift bridge in operation across the Chi- cago river at the entrance to the Grand central station, constructed in 1900,. the movable span, center to center of bear- ings of this bridge being 275 ft. The long spans in both of these instances are required because the railroad tracks cross the channel at acute angles. The four-track Scherzer rolling lift bridges constructed for the New York, New Haven & Hartford railroad at Cos Cob, "Conn. and: at - Westport, Conn., and the first double-track por- tion of the four-track Scherzer rolling lift bridge across the Housatonic river have all been placed in service within the past year: Other four-track bridges of the Scherzer type are un- der construction for this railroad com- pany across Neponset river, Massachu- setts; Niantic river, Connecticut; See- konk river, Rhode Island, and six-track bridges across the Bronx river and across Eastchester bay, New York. All of these new bridges take the place of center-pier swing bridges. The new bridges are designed to carry with in- creased safety the greatly expanding passenger and freight traffic of the railroad company and also facilitate traffic over the company's electrified lines. Substantial progress is bine made in the construction of two double-track Scherzer rolling lift bridges for the Norfolk & Western Railway Co. over the eastern and southern branches of the Elizabeth river at Norfolk, Va., and upon the two similar bridges for the Brooklyn Rapid Transit a Brooklyn, New York. The numerous. other gailtoad. elec- tric railway and highway Scherzer rolling lift bridges for which the Scher- zer Rolling Lift Bridge Co. is furnish- ing the designs, plans and specifica- tions and consulting engineering. ser- vices in the United States and abroad 19 indicates' that the coming year will be more active and will call for a larger tonnage of structural steel, machinery steel, and electrical, gasoline and other power equipments than during any passed year.
