HARBOR STRIKE AT ANTWERP. Since the middle of August a serious strike has prevailed in the harbor of Ant- werp, though there are indications now that the force of it is broken. In the fall of 1900 a disagreement of wages result- ed in throwing 25,000 men out of employ- ment at Antwerp. Negotiations were com- pleted then by which the standard wage was increased to five francs a day. This agreement lasted until August when a certain contingent on the docks demand- ed an increase of from five to. six francs per day. Circumstances compelled the granting of the request temporarily, but as it was apparent that it would be fol- lowed by a general demand, the feder- ation of employers declared that the old rates would have to be restored.
