28 TAE MarRINE REVIEW ACCIDENTS OF A MONTH The following summary of accidents for the past 'month if compared with those of former months, shows dis- tinctly that navigation during the late months of the season is extremely haz- ardous. The loss to vessel owners during the past month has been great, total losses numbering. 15. Weather conditions are, of course, largely "responsible for the increased number of accidents during the fall months, but in this particular month the most serious losses were brought about by other causes, . The steamer Cyprus, which sank in deep water on Lake Superior, drown- ing 23 members of her crew, is by far the greatest loss of the season. The Cyprus was. making her second trip when the disaster occurred. Her car- go shifted and she, turned turtle. The steamer Spokane of the Wilson Transit Co.'s fleet which stranded on Gull rock, Lake Superior, is in» all probability: also.) a. total loss, «ie steamer struck while out in a 'heavy storm, and owing to the continued bad weather wreckers have been un- able to approach her. She is gradually being pounded to pieces. Her loss is estimated at $125,000. Seven collisions occurred, the most serious of which were those between the steamers Wm. E. Reis and Mon- f0eLO Smith, the John W. Moore and Queen City, and the. Lake Shore and. Pabst, all in the Détroit and St: Clair rivers. The Pabst was sunk and is a total loss, while the Lake Shore was damaged to the extent of $30,000. The John W. Moore which was sunk: in collision with the Queen City is practically a total loss, aithough Wrecker, Reid is now working on the steamer in the hope of raising her. Extensive repairs were required by the Queen City as a result of this col- lision. The steamer Wm. E. Reis was sunk in collision with the Monroe C. Smith. The Reis is in very bad shape, bit El, -W. Baker,: who is working on the vessel, expects to raise her. ' She will not go into commission until next spring if raised. The steam- er Smith was badly damaged but was temporarily repaired to complete her trip, after which she will be docked for repairs. Groundings have been due princi- pally to the low stages of water. | DATE. .NAME OF VESSEL. NATURE OF ACCIDENT. PLACE. Oct. 6. Ste "City of Naples... ......<..
