AROUND THE GREAT: LAKES. The steamers Roswell P:' Flower and Whitaker have gone into winter quarters at Milwaukee, Wis. The barge Bryn Mawr of the Pitts- burg Steamship Co.'s fleet has gone to Erie to lay up for the winter. A large frame storehouse is being erected at Duluth by G. A. Tomlinson to furnish supplies, such as groceries, meats and ice, to vessels of the Tom- linson fleet. The barges M. S. Bacon and Mel- bourne collided last week at the en- trance .of the harbor at Cleveland while being towed out. The Bacon was damaged but did not stop. Joseph Tobin, formerly of Amherst- burg, died at the Detroit marine hos- pital last Saturday. He had sailed on the lakes for 20 years, but had been ill for the last three years. The new package freighter Roches- ter, of the: Weston: Transit Co.'s: fleet, left the Ecorse ship yard on _ her maiden trip in Robert Murray on Saturday last. The little passenger steamer Idle- wild struck a submerged pontoon near the' Walker 'street dock in the Detroit river, recently, damaging three bot- tom plates. She is now being repaired there. Capt. John Dudleson, of the steam- er Waldo, was obliged to leave the steamer at the Sault last Saturday, owing to illness. Capt. Frank Root took the Waldo to Detroit and Capt. M. Humphrey then assumed mand. Wrecker Reid has completed the cofferdam on the steamer John W. Moore, also sunk in the Detroit river, and as soon as a bulkhead across the forward end has been completed he out. Capt: Thomas. Hey Clark. of . the steamer Pueblo, felf a distance of about 50 ft. from the steamer at the Bifialo.. Dry. Dock: Co/s. yard last week, sustaining serious injury. He is in a hospital at Buffalo and is said to be recovering. The schooner Onandaga, belonging to the Canadian Towing & Transpor- tation Co., Montreal, Que., and' the barge Black Diamond, both heavily laden with coal, were sunk off Stony Point light, Lake Ontario, last week. The boats sprang leaks in the heavy seas. The crews were rescued. Wrecker H. W. The monthly report of United States Engineer Banks shows that during October 502 ships passéd through 'Portage lake and canals, ap- proximating 400,000 tons and nearly 1,000 passengers Copper shipments out of Houghton via the lake route aggregated 10,000 tons, to say noth- ing of the thousands of tons shipped by rail.
