46 FASTER THAN MOST RAILWAY TRAINS. ; In view of the great interest taken in naval questions at the present day, the new type of British ocean-going 'THE MarRINeE. REVIEW knots per hour. The Ghurka "more than realized these conditions, and has proved herself to have a radius Of action of 1,715 knots at a speed of knots per hour. 134 TORPEDO BOAT DESTROYER GHURKA SPEEDING AT 3414 KNOTS. torpedo-boat destroyers deserve special mention. The speed of 33 knots is an exceptionally high one under any con- ditions, but with the stipulation for this speed being maintained over a period of six hours, combined with heavy scantlings of hull and machin- ery, and with strictly limited consump- tion of fuel, it becomes a problem of some considerable difficulty. Messrs. R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie & Co., have had great success with high- speed destroyers, having built and en- gined a large number, representing specimens of all types at present in use. Further, they built 'tthe Viper, Velox and Eden, which were the earli- est turbine boats ordered by the Brit- ish admiralty. The Ghurka, one of the new type referred to, intended for open-sea work, has just completed her trials. In the full power trial a speed of about a knot in excess of that specified in the contract was obtained, the speed over the whole period of six hours was 33.91 knots per hour, while the. mean of six runs over the measured course during the fourth hour gave a speed of 34 knots, and the highest mean speed on the meas- uted mile was 341% knots. There is little doubt that had the quantity of oil per square foot of heating surface net been restricted, a speed of over 34 knots could have been easily main- tained during the six hours. ditions laid down by the admiralty, which have to be fulfilled on the 24. hrs. consumption trial, are tliat the vessel should have a radius of 1,500 miles at a speed of not less than 13 The con-. known as the Peace tanks are also filled, she is capable of steaming al- most 2,500 knots without a stop, which is equivalent to a voyage across the North Atlantic to Canada. This is a much larger radius of action than any other vessel of the type has yet at- Gaede ge eee cs This trial was completed on Nov. 29, after which the vessel proceeded to Sheerness, took in oil fuel and sailed for the Tyne on the morning of Nov. If what are. ness to Neweastle, a continuous speed in a moderate sea of 27 knots being comfortably maintained with four-fifths of her boilers. Messrs. Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. have achieved these results with boilers burning oil fuel which has recently been introduced into the British navy. The Ghurka's dimensions are: Length, 255 ft.; breadth, 25 ft. 6 in.; and dis- placement, 864 tons. Her armament , consists of three 12-pounder quick-fir- ing guns, one on each side of the forecastle and one on a platform aft, and she has also two 'torpedo tubes. The vessel is fitted with turbine ma- chinery of the Parsons type, which has been constructed by the builders. There are three propeller shafts, on the center one of which a high pres- sure turbine is fitted, while on each wing shaft there is a low pressure turbine, and, in addition, cruising and astern turbines. The vessel proved herself to be easily maneuvered ahead and astern. The cruising tur- bines are used for economical steam- ing at sea. The boilers, five in num- ber, are of the latest improved Yar- row type. They are specially fitted with oil-burning arrangements and have proved that boilers of this type are equally efficient when burning either oil or coal. ANOTHER 344%4-KNOT TURBINE DESTROYER.
