26 MARINE REVIEW. [May & TRADE NOTES. Stockholders of the General Electric Co. have voted to increase the capital stock to $45,000,000. The Kingsford Foundry & Machine Works, Oswego, N. Y., has just issued a little catalogue devoted to their marine boilers, centrifugal pump- ing machinery, excavators and marine engines. The catalogue 1s 1n- structive and argumentative throughout and is well worth writing for. The latest catalogue of M. T. Davidson, 43-53 Keap street, Brooklyn, N. Y., reaches the dignity of a book. It is carefully printed, well illus- trated and thoroughly indexed. It deals with steam pumps, pumping engines, power pumps, condensers, evaporating and distilling apparatus, and ash ejectors. Officers of vessels managed in the office of S. R. Chamberlain & Co., Sherman street, Chicago, are: Steamers--H. L. Worthington, 'Capt. Wm. Chamberlain, Engineer John H. Murdoch; Ogemaw, Capt. Martin O'Toole, Engineer ----------. _Schooners--A, T. Bliss, Capt. James c Johnson; J. B. Wilbor, Capt. E. S. Hellesey; D. R. Martin, Capt. Wm. J. O'Brien. Black and red on gray stock make a very attractive cover for the latest catalogue of the Philadelphia Pneumatic Tool Co. The body of the book is printed in brown. The catalogue-deals quite copiously with the Keller pneumatic hammers, riveters, rotary drills, foundry rammers and other makes of pneumatic tools. It will be sent to anyone interested upon application. It is officially announced that on and after July 1, 1902, the Railroad Supply Co. and the Q. & C. Co. of Chicago will be operated separately as previous to Jan. 1, 1901, except that all interests pertaining to tie plates have been sold by the Q. & C. 'Co. and will be hereafter conducted by the Railroad Supply Co. In this division of business interests is included the good will, the best feeling and co-operation of each with the other. The American Blower Co. of Detroit is doing a very extensive busi- ness in the installation of mechanical draft apparatus. Among other orders recently secured may be mentioned equipment for the San Francisco (Cal.) custom house and postoffice; Queen's University, Kingston, Ont.; Bee Hive Hygienic Ice Co., Brooklyn; Indianapolis (Ind.) Water Co.; Metro- politan Electric Co., Reading, Pa.; Marysville (O.) Light & Water Co. The Alberger Condenser Co., 95 Liberty street, New York, has just issued a catalogue devoted to the Alberger cooling towers. This company manufactures high grade condensing engines and pumping machinery. The catalogue is well illustrated, both in line and in half-tone. 'Cooling towers were commercially introduced into this country about ten years ago. Since that time they have been installed in a great variety of situa- tions and have become recognized as an important and valuable adjunct to Hees stations and refrigerating plants where the water supply is limited. Halifax voted overwhelmingly last week in favor of the proposition that the city should grant a 'bonus of $100,000 for the establishment of a ship building industry on the shores of that harbor. The town of Darts- mouth, across the bay, voted a similar amount and the Nova Scotia legis- lature at its session also voted $100,000. The proposition has been devel- oped from the offer of Messrs. Swan & Hunter of Newcastle-on-Tyne to establish a yard and contribute half the necessary capital if such a bonus, | as has now been determined upon, should be raised. By the narrow majority of one the supreme court has sustained the | contention of former Speaker Thomas B. Reed that the molten metal . carrier and mixer patented by Capt. William R. Jones of the Edgar- | Thomson Steel Works was a meritorious invention and directed the United States court for the western district of Pennsylvania to enter a decree for | an injunction to prevent the Cambria Iron Co. from using it without the -- consent of the Carnegie Steel Co., which owns the patent. The judgment | of the court was announced by Justice Brown, who briefly reviewed the ' steps in the litigation over the patent, which was described as being for a | "method of mixing molten pig metal." A caustic dissent was announced by Justice White, in which the chief justice and Justices Harlan and Brewer concurred. From the Buffalo Forge Co., Buffalo, N. Y., comes report of the usual | brisk demand for their products in blowers, forges and other specialties. Among numerous orders of recent date may be noted one for the equip- ment of the Pennsylvania Steel Co.'s forge shop at Philadelphia with | twenty down-draft forges. The Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Ry. Co. _ has ordered three large fan-system heating plants for shops at Collin- wood, near Cleveland. This order involves: the heating and ventilating | of the Lake Shore company's wood-working mill, passenger coach paint shop and freight car repair shop. The Bowery Bay Building & Improve- ment Co., New York city, is to be furnished with a 200 H.P. horizontal center crank engine for electric lighting purposes. This company bought from the Buffalo Forge Co. the engine that was awarded a gold medal at the Omaha exposition in 1898. This engine has been in active service at the New York company's works since date of purchase. The order just entered calls for an engine of the same type, but of larger horse power. The Buffalo company is also to furnish the Seaboard Realty Co. of New York city for electric lighting purposes six 120 H.P. engines and two 95 H.P. engines. In order to revive the drooping sugar trade of the West Indies the © Elder, Dempster Steamship 'Co, has offered to carry the sugar free of charge to British ports. This is equivalent to an export bounty of $5 per | ton. The John A. Roebling's Sons Co. of Trenton, N. J., has just com- - pleted negotiations for the purchase of a large tract of land near St, Louis | on which it will shortly build up an extensive branch' indust branch plant will employ about 500 men. industry. The M. B. McDonald, Mystic, Conn., has secured a contract to build a five-mas ed wooden schooner for Capt. Lucius J. Stevens of Clinton, ae er dimensions are: Length, 240 ft-; beam, 46°ft:; dépth of hold, **BENEDICT-NICKEL"' Seamless Condenser Tubes are the only ones that resist electrolysis.
