28 MARINE REVIEW. [May 22 A NEW RIPPING SAW. A tool especially adapted to the heavy ripping done in ship yards is illustrated and described herewith. This machine embodies many features that facilitate work and at the same time insure the best possible results. q Attention is called to a few advan- tages claimed by the manufacturers. It is very power- ful, and is designed for ripping parallel strips of material where a_ large amount of heavy work is required. The feed, which is very strong, con- sists of a feed shaft and toothed disk for feeding, with a shaft fitted with 2 F ---- either a fluted or smooth roll for discharging the material, and is so arranged that the entire mechanism can be lifted out of the way if desired to use the machine as a hand rip saw. The table is made either of iron or hardwood, with a detachable section around the saw, so that heads for gaining, rabbetting, etc., or a series of saws for ripping several pieces at a time may be used. The fence is long and has a movement across the table by hand lever, which in-' stantly releases, moves and locks, or vice-versa, and has an index to gauge the distance at which it is set from the saw. Friction rolls are placed just before and after the saw to diminish friction. The machine can also be fitted with a side roll and bevel attach- ment for making siding, for any angle or thickness. Shops that do not have much heavy work will find this a very fine addition, as it will save using a separate machine and may be applied to light resawing. The makers of this machine. J. A. Fay & Egan Co., Nos. 825 to 345 West Front street, Cincinnati, Ohio, will willingly furnish further particu- lars and special terms, and will also send cuts showing it to better ad- vantage and more in detail. A ship and engine builder, with a thorough experience in all branches of the business, both theoretical and practical, and with a reputation that compares favorably with that of any ship builder in the country, is desir- ous of opening negotiations with persons anxious to engage the services of a strictly first-class man, either to start a new yard of the most advanced type, or with a view to developing an established plant along the lines of the most economical policy known to American ship building. Experi- enced in all types of steamships, including battleships, cruisers, torpedo boats, Atlantic liners, yachts, etc., and particularly equipped for the con- struction of cheap and economical freighters and tramp steamers. As an evidence of good faith I am willing to invest $20,000 with my services in a promising concern that will bear the strictest investigation. No small offers considered.
