1902. | Stato ge en were also run between Baltimore and New York, outside in the eighties. The Kershaw is a single screw steel steamer of 2.600 tons, built in 1899 at the Har- lan & Hollingsworth vard in Wilming- ton. 'The Boston & Philadelphia Steam- ship Co. have six ships in commission. of which the largest is the Grecian. of 2.827 tons. built also at Harlan & Holl- ingsworth's in t900. 'The Grecian is a steel boat 265 ft. long, and is equipped with triple-exnansion engines. It is a rather odd fact that the sin- eularly unsuccessful Citv of Savannah. formerly La Grande Duchesse. is the onlv twin screw coasting steamer ont of New York which runs to another Amer- ican port on the Atlantic. Our coast- wise constriction has been rather back- ward in this respect. owing more per- haps to a general spirit of conservatism 'than to anv specific reason or reasons. as the builders, in general. have none to alleze accept that the familiar single screw type seems to fulfill the demands of the coastwise service, but it is proba- hle that the next decade will show a radical change in this respect. as there are indications of orders for twin screw coasters in the near future. At present. however. the orders for new shins are rather inactive. althouch the Delaware River Ship & Engine Ruildine Ca is ta Nuild at once a'sister ship to the Citv of Memphis for the Savannah line. and a new hoat ahout the size of the Denver for the Mallory line. The numerous interesting features of the different lines of the present day must be left chiefly to the imagination of the reacer to sunrly from the tables as lack of space renders it impossible to enumerate them. Attention. how- ever, may be called to the successful nassenger husiness the old Dominion line has built up hetween New York and Old Point Comfort and Norfolk, and to the large scope of the Clyde line which, at one time or another. has oper- ated services to a great number of southern ports and maintained a large auxiliarv fleet of inland and river boats, besides its deep-water services.
