1903.] MARINE REVIEW AND MARINE RECORD. 31 UNITED STATES SHIP BUILDING CO. Receiver James Smith, Jr., lost no time in assuming charge of the affairs of the United States Ship Building Co. He filed his bond of $100,000 immediately upon his appointment and. went to the general offices of the company. "I found it necessary," said he, "to take immediate steps to prevent demoralization and con- sequent loss. My desire is to conserve the interest of the bond- holders and keep this great business intact and to place it at the earliest possible moment upon a sound financial basis. No in- terruption of the uniform progress of the work is contemplated, as not only would the United States governmeuit: but the great maritime interests be injuriously affected by anything that would delay the work of the plants." No action has been taken by the directors upon Mr. Lewis Nixon's resignation. John F. Allen, 370-372 Gerard avenue, New York city, re- ports May shipments of Allen riveters as follows: Canadian Ship Building Co., Toronto, one machine; American Car & Foundry Co., Berwick, Pa. two; W. Their whistle operating device is in use on several vessels, some of them being on the great lakes, and is , pronounced by those using it as a great success. It does away with the necessity of an attendant looking after the blowing of the whistle at intervals during fogs or snow storms, and does the work better than it can be done by hand.
