~ _ SUCTION DREDGE FOR SAVANNAH HARBOR. Bids are being solicited by Capt. J. C. Sanford, government engineer at Philadelphia, for the construction -of a steel, twin- screw, suction dredge for service in Savannah harbor, Georgia. _ The dredge is to be constructed to conform in every respect to the rules and regulations of the American Bureau of Shipping and is to be of the following dimensions: Length between per- pendiculars, 166 ft.; length over all, 177 ft.; beam, 38 ft.; depth, 19 ft. The frames are to be of bulb angles, spaces 24 in. center to center, and shall be in one piece from midship line to main deck _ plate stringer. All plating is to be worked "in and out" in lon- gitudinal strakes. The hull-is to be subdivided by watertight collision' bulkheads on frames No. 9 and No. 73, extending to the lower deck only. A third bulkhead is to be placed on frame No. 41. Two coal bunkers are to be provided, one on each side of the boilers. The forward sand bin is to extend from frame No. 13 to frame No. 29; and the after bin from frame No. S240 Tame NO. 5G. eo : : ~The dredge will be propelled by two vertical, inverted, di- rect-acting, surface-condensing, fore-and-aft compound engines, HOISTING ENGINE MARINE REVIEW AND MARINE RECORD. kinds under construction, with their surrounding stages and Oe) Oo 2 BERTHS 2 2BERTHS 2 BERTHS of JO g O° Oo we 9° 2 | me = m z GRATING ue i ie eas | LN - HARTER SAND PROPELLING ENGINES -- ENGINE MARINE REVIEW jooos) GALLEY af ! coe eS eo cee es Pee eee ps ' ES oO ENGINEER OX U SW = SPARE POOM. Aug. 19--The dock trial of the engines of the United States cruiser Des Moines at the Fore River ship yard took place last. week under the supervision of the United States navy authorities at the yard, Naval Constructor Watt and Lieut. Com'd'r E. H. Scribner, inspector of machinery. The ryp lasted four hours with all six of the boilers in use, and about 18 tons of ordinary steam coal were consumed, giving an average of 130 lbs. of steam. About one-half the full power fot the en. gines was required, the revolutions varying between ninety and 108 per minute--the equivalent of a speed of about 12 knots. The machinery behaved excellently, very little tremor being commu. nicated to the hull of the vessel, and the entire test was most. satisfactory to the government officials. The cruiser's sea trials will take place in a few weeks. ane Owing to the crowded condition of the building beach at the ship yard, which is now occupied by eight hulls of varioys piles of materials, it has been decided that it would be dan- gerous to admit a large crowd of people to the launching of the a H TOILET LOWER DECK LEAD STAND Oe GANGWAY. Steam is to be supplied by two Scotch return-tubular boilers, 13 ft. in diameter and 12 ft. long, fitted with three 4o-in. corrugated furnaces each. There are to be two pumping engines of the vertical, inverted, com- pound, condensing type with cylinders of 12 and 22 in. diameter and stroke of 14 in. They are to be directly connected to the 15-in. sand pumps which are to be of the centrifugal type of extra heavy construction and especially adapted for dredging. The blades are to be covered with renewable steel plates for their entire working surface. The depth of the blade is to be uni- and to pass in easy curve from suction inlet to the peri- phery. _. The dredge is to have two masts of Oregon pine, 75 ft. from main deck to mast heads, and to be fitted with all necessary iron work and rig. A Hyde combination 'steam and hand windlass, _Hyde steam capstan and Williamson steam steering engine are to be furnished. Two steam hoisters, either Lidgerwood or ~ Williamson, are also to be installed. _ The inspector's and captain's rooms are to be of pine and cherry and the equipment of the living quarters is to be modern _ throughout, - six-masted schooner William L. Douglas, which will occur some time during the last week of August. Last year when the seven- masted schooner Thomas W. Lawson was launched the beach was sufficiently clear to permit the 10,000 or 15,000 people who were present to keep at a safe distance from the ways, but now that the open space is very much restricted, it is impossible for the present to issue a general invitation to the public such as it has been the custom of the yard to send out for previous events of this kind. Work on the six-masted schooner William L. Douglas has reached a stage where the painter is close on the heels of the riveter. The greater part of the hull has been painted and the work of construction is now confined to the stern and the stem, while the deck fittings are being placed and the hatchways com: pleted. The after house on the high poop deck is receiving €- pecial attention; the floor is laid and the woodwork outside 18 being put on. This house will have two companionways, fore an aft on the port side. : é With the delivery at Fore River of the steel castings for the sternpost, but little remains to complete the framing of the hull of the Fall River Line freight steamer. Already the shell plates are being put on and the heavy castings of the frame for the engines are being assembled in the machine shop. The tib-
