£903-] MARINE REVIEW AND MARINE RECORD. 31 except the American and Mediterranean route, the distance being more than halved. "3, Tyne ports to the St. Lawrence river, the distance saved would be 150 miles. "4, West of. Britain and northeast of Ireland to middle western ports of the Continent, the distance saved would be from 377 to 98 miles." The canal will affect an enormous tonnage, estimated by the sanguine engineers at 9,500,000 tons per annum. At an average rate per ship and cargo of 36 cents per ton, this would yield a revenue of about $3,406,550. IRON AND STEEL IN FOREIGN TRADE. The 'anticipated change in the movements of iron and steel in the foreign trade of the United States did not make itself ap- parent in the August record as was expected by students of this subject. The figures of the August imports and exports of iron and steel just presented by the department of commerce and labor, through its bureau of statistics, show that the imports of iron and steel in August, 1903, were $3,440,100 in value, against $3,- 529,676 in the preceding month--July--and against $4,123,314 in August of last year. Thus the falling off of imports of iron and steel in August, compared with the preceding month, amounted to less than $100,000, and compared with August of last year amounted to $683,214. Practically all of the reduction occurs in ingots, blooms, slabs, billets, and bars of steel, and tin plates. The quantity of ingots, blooms, slabs, billets, and bars of steel, and steel in forms not otherwise specified, imported in the month of August, 1903, was 45,650,655 lbs., against 74,076,956 lbs. in July, 1903, and 87,420,104 lbs. in August, 1902. In tin plate the importation of August, 1903, was 6,977,012 lbs. against 11,598,703 lbs. in July, 1903, and 6,287,106 lbs. in August, 1902. While the reduction in these two items shown in pounds seems large, the actual reduction, as already shown, is less than $100,000, as com- pared with the preceding month of the present year, while for the eight months ending with August the total value was $32,- 289,525, against $23,456,760 in the corresponding eight months of last year, and $12,210,382 in the corresponding eight months of the preceding year, 1901. The following table shows the total value of iron and steel imports in the eight months ending with August: Value of iron and steel,.and manufactures thereof (exclu- sive of iron ore), imported into the United States. light months ending August. At the request of several senators and representatives the department of commerce and labor has begun the preparation of tables showing the effect of foreign subsidies upon the mer- chant marine of the world. It is the intention to use the tables in the contest at the coming session of congress for the ship- ping bill.
