Her machinery installation consists of two sets of four-cylinder triple-expan- sion engines, with cylinders of 26, 43, 51 and 51 in. diameter; stroke, 42 in., with an indicated horsepower of 7,500. She is equipped-with eight single-ended © boilers, each 14 ft. 9 in. by 11 ft., and is. fitted with forced draft. The steam steering gear is supplied by Williamson of Philadelphia, all the equip- ment being of the best and latest type, including a wireless telegraphy outfit. Three steam freight elevators handle the cargo, the whole of the main deck being given over to cargo space, for which there is accommodation for 1,500 tons. The officers and crew are pro- vided with quarters on the upper deck, limited passenger accommodation be- ing on the same deck. A_ spacious promenade deck is in the after part of the vessel. There are four 24-ft. life- boats on the upper déck. The Massachusetts is the first of the three fast freighters, building for the New England Navigation Co. to go into commission. The Bunker -- Hill, sister ship to the Massachusetts, is ex- pected to leave the yard early in July. The Old Colony, the last of the fleet to go into commission, was launched at the yard of William Cramp & Sons on Wednesday, June 26, at 2:30 p. m. Mrs. Isabel Taylor Ball, wife of Mr. of New York, and daughter of Mr. Stevenson. Taylor, christened the vessel, the launching party accompanying Mrs. Ball from New York. Unlike the machinery installation of the other vessels, the Old Colony will be equipped with three Parsons marine turbines, the turbines being constructed at the Quintard Iron Works Co., and will have triple screws. She will be similar to the others in boiler power.
