An Italian correspondent of the London Times predicts that the use of concrete in boat building will large- ly take the place of iron and steel. Ele: says: Large boats of reinforced concrete have been built already in this coun- t-y, and five of these, of 120 ton and more, were On commission for the Italian navy. The first of these boats, a 120-ton barge, was built in 1906, on the plans of Mr. Gabellini, an Italian who has given his whole 'attention to reinforced concrete, and who for many years has been con- ducting experiments with this class of material. This boat, which was built with double bottom and of the cel- lular type, was submitted to severe tests in the Spezia arsenal, where a much larger boat built of iron and with an iron ram was directed against it without producing any considerable damage to it. After some time, and in consequence of the satisfactory re- 'sults given by this first boat, four more of these barges were ordered on account of the Italian navy. It is my opinion that owing to the unfa- vorable conditions of Italy as an iron producing country the problem of reinforced concrete for ships will meet with a good deal of attention here, and that experiments and trials on a much larger and more impor- tant scale will shortly be conducted. RAILROAD RATE. Apparently the railroads are begin- ning a propaganda upon the reason- 'ableness of freight charges through 'the: medium. ofa cards. series of postal The contention is that the freight charge is so small that it cuts no figure whatever in the retail unit and therefore is not a factor in the higher prices for commodities so ob- taining. Apparently the published tar- iff bears this out. An excerpt is given from a lecture on "The Freight Kate Structure," by Logan G. Mc- Pherson, lecturer on transportation at Johns Hopkins University. He says: "The transportation charge on the material entering into a pair of shoes made in a St. Louis factory averages one and 'one-quarter cent. The trans- portation charge, to place that pair in the hands of a consumer in any part of the United States is about equal to the postage on an ordinary letter. An ordinary bed that retails at St. Louis at $8, for example, will have paid the railroads about 40 cents. From 10 pounds of nails made in Pittsburg the railroads will have ob- tained a trifle over two 'cents, and from 10 pounds of wire two and one- half cents. An axe made in the Pittsburg district that retails in St. Louis for, $1, will have paid the rail- road one and one-quarter cents. The freight on a dozen eggs for 1,000 miles is less than the postage of a letter, and a pound of Wisconsin but- ter may be sent to New England or New York for half the cost that the bill for it would go by mail.
