The New York increase of $73,000,- 000 and the Galveston decrease of $72,000,000 are noticeable; as arealso the Philadelphia increase of $19,000,- 000 and the New Orleans and Balti- more decreases of $12,000,000 and - $9,000,000, respectively. Pensacola, Savannah, Detroit, Buffalo, Port Hu- ron and Niagara about held their own. Inasmuch as were disturbed during seven of the 10 months under review, this showing is eminently satisfactory on the whole. _leges at Montreal, the world's finances in stoking and a remarkable increase in speed have been obtained. The change which is now to be made is not due to any failure or de- fect in the oil burning system, but is designed to provide against acci- dents and contingencies such as may arise in war. There is no supply of oil fuel in the United Kingdom, and every gallon of oil would have to be imported. Thus security against any interruption of the oil supply is at- tained by fitting torpedo craft with furnaces which can burn either oil or coal. Allthe modern battleships and cruis- ers of the navy are constructed so as to consume either coal or oil. The oil is used when spurting and forcing the pace. INLAND NAVIGATION CO. The Inland Navigation Co. is the title under which the various steam- ships heretofore operated as separate companies under the management of mh ©. and A.B. Mackay,. Hamilton, Ont., have been amalgamated. The new company has a capitalization of $2,000,000 and in addition to the 11 steamships acquired the wharfinger, cartage, warehousing and coal busi- Rese Of R. ©: and A. B. The Dundurn and the Rosedale are on the Canadian register, but the others are registered in Great Britain. The Stadacona, which is also of canal size, is expected out early in the fall. Bids for the construction of the mammoth new dry dock to be built at the Puget Sound nayy yard wal be opened at the navy department, July 18. This. structure will be the largest of its kind in the United States and one of the largest in the world, and is estimated to cost $2,- 000,000. It is to be completed within three years of the awarding of the contract. The dock will be 863 ft. long and 135 ft. broad, exceeding the length of the presen! dock by over 200 ft. The State of Colorado is to present the cruiser named for it with a silver service at San Francisco prior to the departure of the fleet to the Orient in August. The design of the service is after Paul Revere, the revolution- ary war hero, and is without orna- mentation except for the seal of the state and the word "Colorado." ° The set is sufficient for 36 persons and is valued at $5,000. Arrangements are being made for the dredging of the Connecticut river as far up as Springfield, Mass., for the purpose of assisting in the trans- portation of coal to that point. The trade will be carried on by a vessel fitted with dredging apparatus which will also 'be used in loading and un- loading a string of. barges. It @ planned to make the first trip in about two weeks,
