34 OBITUARY. Rear Admiral Henry Glass died at Paso Robles, Hot Springs, Cal., on Sept. 1 at the age of 64. His death was the result of an operation which was _ per- formed about a month ago, and from which he. failed to rally. Admiral Glass, who was at the head of the class at An- napolis which included Admirals Evans, Crowninshield and "Hendrickson, was re- tired in 1906. He was born in Hopkins- ville, Ky., Jan. 7, 1844, and was appointed to the naval academy in 1860. His first assignment was on the Canandaigua. He served on her with the South Atlantic blockading squadron in 1863. He was then transferred to the Pawnee. He fin- ished the war on the Powhatan and the Dacotah. In 1868 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander, and the next year was detailed to the Phil- adelphia navy yard. In 1874 he was placed in command of the schoolship Jamestown. In 1894 he was promoted to the rank of captain. When the war with Spain began, Captain Glass was transferred to the Philippines. As com- mander of the cruiser Charleston he con- voyed the first troops to the Philippines. He was present at the lattle of Manila Bay. In 1901 he was made rear admiral, and two years later was placed in com- : mand of the Pacific station, from which he was retired. Admiral Glass was the author of several works of military mat- ters and was a member of the Loyal Legion, the Society of American Wars, the Society of Foreign Wars, and the University, Olympic and Union League Clubs of San Francisco.
