30 LAUNCH OF THE WHITE STAR- DOMINION LINER LAUR- ENTIC. On Thursday, Sept. 10, the fine large triple screw steamer Laurentic was launched by Messrs. Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Belfast. The launch of this vessel is an event of more than. ordinary interest in the shipping THe MarRINE REVIEW The launch of the Laurentic is also specially interesting on account of the adoption in this vessel of a combina- tion of reciprocating engines with a low pressure turbine, the Laurentic being the first passenger steamer de- signed with this arrangement of ma- chinery. Moreover, it has been gen- erally assumed that the adoption of WHITE STAR CANADIAN LINER LAURENTIC world. As previously announced, the Laurentic will signalize the entry of the White Star line into the Canad- ian trade, and thus the strengthening of one of the most important ties in our imperial connection. The new departure has been heart- ily acclaimeed by all interested in the development of the trade and com- merce between the United Kingdom and Canada, as it is recognized that a company which has attained the high- est reputation in the New York and other important trades will bring to the new connection thsoe qualities of enterprise, foresight and commercial activity that have made the line so successful in the other great ocean routes. It is confidently anticipated therefore that this connection will be the means of stimulating the trade between the mother country and that great dominion of the west which has recently been the scene of such memorable historic gatherings, cele- brating so auspiciously the happy results --social, commercial and imperial-- from the blending under the British flag of two great races differing in temperament but equal in courage, en- durance and the other qualities es- sential to national ability and prog- ress. JUST BEFORE LAUNCHING. WHITE STAR CANADIAN this novelty in the Laurentic is some indication of the owners' intentions with regard to the machinery of the other large liners which they are con- templating. This arrangement of ma- chinery constitutes the vessel a triple Screw steamer, each of the wing pro- pellers being driven by four crank triple. balanced engines, and the cen- LINER LAURENTIC SHOWING tral propeller -by a turbine. The ob. ject is of course to retain the adyan- tages of the highly perfected balanceq reciprocating engines and at the same time get the benefit of the further expanison of steam in a low pressure turbine, whilst avoiding the necessity for an astern turbine, which is essen- tial in steamers fitted with turbines only, whereas in this vessel both for going astern and maneuvering in and out of port the reciprocating engines will be more than sufficient, as they -will develop over three-fourths of the total combined horsepower. It is very appropriate that this practical revolu- tion in steamship machinery, due to the genius of British -- engineers, should be introduced into the Lauren- tic, and thus signalize in a_ special manner the introduction of the White Star line into the Canadian trades one of the most important services of the empire. The Laurentic will be the largest vessel in the Canadian trade, being 565 ft. long by 67 ft. 4 in. beam, and 14,500 tons gross. She is designed to carry a large quantity of cargo, also a full complement of passengers-- about 230 first class, 430 second class and over 1,000 third class. Needless to say the Laurentic will PROPELLERS. be, like all the other vessels of the White Star Line, designed and_ built on the most approved principles, nothing that long experience and practical knowledge can suggest being wanting to make her as perfect as possible in construction, arrangement and appointments. She has been built on the cellular double bottom princti-
