BOAT HANDLING EQUIPMENT. One of the most commendable ma- rine inventions in lifesaving appli- ances placed on the market during the past year is the Ryan-Tanning boat handling device. a few months Although only in existence the com- pany formed to place the apparatus before the shipping and shipbuilding interests has met with marked success, the now. being part of the boat-handling gear of several sea-go- ing passenger steamers. As will be seen on referring to the ilustrations the apparatus consists in part of two rocking shafts attached to the lifeboat chocks and operated by levers. By the throwing over of the levers two rollers fitted on short arms attached to the rocking shafts are brought in contact with the keel of the boat, \taisings'. 4 about. 1. im, and simultaneously . lowering the chocks. The same movement releases the chain gripes, which are attached at the lower end to cams or hooks on the rocking shafts, and the boat the davits' ready to device is hanging in swing out. In launching a lifeboat no previous training is necessary with this appar- atus, which is extremely simple and rapid in operation. Several tests have recently been carried out on ves- sels installed with the apparatus, the first of which, on the 'Ward = line TAE Marine. REVIEW ship--with men in it--in 37 seconds. The entire operation was performed with only four men. During the test three starboard lifeboats swung out by three men, all ready for lowering, in 36. seconds.
