14 Lake Vessel Accidents During 1908. While accidents on the great lakes during 1908 were sufficiently numerous, total losses appear to have been slight. The subtraction from the available tonnage of the lake fleet was insignifi- cant. The only important loss in the ore fleet was the steamer D. M. Clemson, which disappeared on Lake Superior early in December. Twenty- three lives were lost in the wreck of the Clemson. Had it not been for this unfortunate disaster, the loss of life during 1908 would have been very low. It is low as it is, numbering 33 altogether. Next to the Clemson, the most im- portant losses were the steamer North Star, the Neshoto, Pascal P. Pratt, Chauncey Hurlbut and Peshtigo. Fol- lowing is a table giving the vessel losses, together with lives lost and vessels upon which they were lost: THE MarINE.
