head the same as your compass heads, You point the sight bar of the pelorus at the sun. This then gives you the bearing of the sun by your compass. If your compass is not correct you will not get the correct bearing, The book of azimzths will give you the correct bearing or azimuth. From this you can then easily figure the error of your compass in just the same manner that you find the error from a range. So you see a Pelorus is a very sim- ple affair. An Azimuth attachment is simply a pelorus without a card. It has a sight vane and pointer and at- taches directly to the compass. But it is not as convenient because as it is attached to the compass you some- times cannot get a clear view of dis- tant objects: .Vhe Pelorus can be set any place and if it is set to read the same as a compass it. answers the same purpose. Therefore you can see that a Pe- lorus is really a bearing finder. And an Azimuth is a bearing of a heavenly body measured in degrees from north. A book of Azimuths 18 a book 7 of bearings. The same book can _ be used for the sun, moon, planets or stars. ISS ; w pi_% = = {ni | PP Cee eee S el Fie. 1). ONE STYLE OF PELORUS. The outfit required for taking bear- ings of the heavenly bodies is as fol- lows: A pelorus. An Azimuth book, "THE MARINE KEVIEW A Nautical Almanac, A Pelorus Slate (a common school slate made into a form as shown un- der the head of "Pelorus Slate"). A Pelorus card (make this your- self, see 'Pelorus card), ,A watch or clock set to Central or Eastern. Standard -tinve.' [i-you 'are doing practice work ashore you will also need a compass.. One can often be borrowed or rented. THE PELORUS. Some large lake vessel owning com- panies supply the whole outfit to their masters. The best makes of Pelorus cost from $40 to $50. A cheap instru- ment, designed especially as a prac- tice instrument in connection with this work, can be bought from Frank Morrison, manufacturer of nautical in- struments, Cleveland, O. The price is $10. This is a neat instrument and will do good work. But you can make a practice = in- strument yourself, without the cost of one cent. See "How to make a practice Pelorus."' Under the head of "The different kinds: of Pelorus" you. will: find a. description: of {he different makes of Pelorus, their spe- cial features, and their cost. you can operate one kind of Pelorus you can operate any kind. special features of each make will be explained to you when you purchase an instrument. The Shadow Dial Pelorus being so generally used on the lakes we will give a short sketch ofcit here. THE SHADOW DIAL PELORUS. The Shadow Dial Pelorus is made on the same principle but the dial is marked in reverse, as follows: You will see tiat the card on this Pelorus is marked differently than a compass card. South is at OQ or where north is on the ordinary Pe-. lorus. You will also see that the other readings on the card are re- versed, Instead of putting the com- When- The 31 pass course to the ship's head as with the ordinary Pelorus you get the cor- rect bearing from the book first and put this at the ship's head. A thin wire, standing in the center of the Pelorus will then throw a shadow on the correct course the ship is steering. If the heavenly body used won't throw a shadow then the ordinary sight bar is used and the pointer will show.the correct course. This shows the error in a very simple way. If your compass does not show the same course as is shown on the Pelorus you can name the error at a glance. RIG, 13; YOUR COMPASS. " YOUR PELORUS. By naming the error we mean that we find out whether it is "East devia- tion" or "West deviation." AN AZIMUTH BOOK. There are several different Azi- muth books published, those generally used on the Great lakes being The Red Book of Azimuth Tables, price 50 cents, Burwood's Azimuth tables, price $2, and Henrich's Book of Azi-
