June, 1909 THE "CAMPBELL" PATENT FIRE BAR. The patent fire bars which are manu- factured 'by the patentees, Messrs. Rail- ton, Campbell & Crawford, engineers' of Liverpool, have during the past few years been adopted by nearly every leading steamship company in Great Britain, and for this reason they will be examined with more than usual in- terest by American users.' These bars have recently been greatly improved by the firm. To understand the improve- mets its. iS. necessary tO give ae = lo "TAE Marine. REVIEW the hangers by which the bar is sus- pended being screwed into the under side of the front plate, and provided with horizontally arranged lugs at their lower ends into which the horizontal bar is slipped, and in which the bar is secured by bolts passing through the lugs on the hanger. The center part of this horizontal bar is free from any obstruction, the supporting hangers being arranged at the ends of the bar beyond the sides of the grate. On the bar is mounted a double lever, the for- ward end of which is adapted to en- ( N SS ZILLES L N95. ie ae : IAQ SECTION THROUGH os YY Jo v5 the end of the pivoted lever, and moves it along the horizontal bar to the grate bar which requires to be moved. He then depresses the handie, and as the forward end of the lever engages in the lug on the grate bar, the bar is raised and shaken as required. If the grate bar should become wedged in its raised position, the stoker may force it down again by pulling upwards upon the handle, causing the lever to press upon the lower side of the socket in the hanger: on the grate bar and forcing it down into position again. A lug is formed 'beneath each grate bar at the forward end, each lug having a socket in its front face. The grate bars are supported upon cross _ plates having beveled faces, which are adapted to be engaged by similar faces on the ends of the grate bars. The bars are not connected together, but each is free, and can be moved Vertically without disturbing any of the others. Beneath the front plate of the furnace is suspended a horizontal bar gage in the sockets on the lugs oL-the grate bars. The lever is so mounted on _ the horizontal. bar that 'it can be slid along the whole length of the fur- nace front into any desired position and can be made to engage with any one of the hangers on the grate bars. The engages portion of the lever which round the horizontal bar is bell shaped, so as to allow the lever to be rocked sideways to some extent, and to rend- er its movement along the horizontal bar easy. A squared arm projects out- ward from the lever and is engaged by a bar having a socket in its end. When it is desired to clinker the furnace, the stoker fits the socketed handle upon accompanying illustrations show the Campbell patent fire bar of the most recent design. The figures on the drawings show the parts supplied by the makers, the references being as fol- lows: No. 1, double bar; 2, working pawl; 3, wayshaft; 4, portable lever; 5, front bearer; 6, back-bearer; 7, back bridge; 8, half-moon; 9, wing bar and strip. The design and construction will be readily understood from the draw- ings. The improvements have been the result gained by the experience with the original design in many hundreds of steamships, The latest style of furnace bars has. several important advantages over the previous system.
