THE Marine REVIEW October, 1909 Fic. 2--Burrarp Inter From- Dominio ern Canada--Vancouver and Victoria, B. C. A study of these two ports, which are only 80 miles apart, can be conveniently made in one article. Victoria, the capital of the province of British Columbia and metropolis of Vancouver Island, is situated on two bays which indent the southeast coast of the island. ' By direct route through the Straits of Juan de Fuca, Victoria is only 70 miles from the Pacific ocean. Of all the harbors in the Puget Sound district, Victoria is closest to the sea. The harbor opens directly into the straits. By water, following the route usually taken by steamers, Victoria is 80 miles southwest of Vancouver. Vancouver is the metropolis of Brit- ish Columbia and the western terminus of the Canadian Pacific railway. It is situated on the southern shore of Bur- rard Inlet, which opens through Eng- lish Bay into the Gulf of Georgia. . a he t The deep sea 'route from Vancouver to the far east and south is from the Gulf of Georgia to the Straits of Juan de Fuca and thence to the Pacific ocean. Vancouver is 178 statute miles due north of Seattle, Wash. Vancouver harbor is divided iby the First Narrows into an outer and inner harbor. The outer harbor consists of English Bay and False creek which latter inlet is- reached -through the southeast corner of English Bay. .Eng- lish. Bay has an area of 15 square miles and an average depth of 12 fathoms with a minimum depth of 4 fathoms at mean low water, near the entrance to False creek. English Bay is exposed to westerly winds and for this reason, except for some minor docks on the southern shore, has not been provided with landing facilities. False creek has an area of 6 sq. miles and a shore line of approxim- n- Frust BUuILDING, "ately 7 miles. VANCOUVER. rs Tt is intimately con- nected with the business and manu- facturing districts of Vancouver and on this account will at some future time play an important part in the city's harbor development. At pres- ent False creek is too shallow to ac- commodate deep sea shipping. Plans, however, have already been made which provide for deepening the chan- nel, building a retaining wall and pre- paring fon a turning basin. A' dredger is now at work and although the plans are not fully matured it is safe to assert that a few -years~ will-see False creek permanently improved and available for deep sea shipping. Inside the first. Narrows is the splendid inner harbor of Vancouver. To say that this body of water com- prises the finest land locked harbor in the United States would be trite. The facts will speak for themselves. BPOKOBMIOCE- Burren, Froto Fic, 3--ENTRANCcE To VANcouver Harzor, C. P. R. Docks IN THE F PR aOR SLCC Ra ee RE atk A een oe OREGROUND.
