434 ing parts are of considerably greater strength than usual. This also applies to the propellers, which are of the four-bladed built-up type. The blades, which, like the bosses are of cast steel, are of exceptional strength for work- ing through ice. The engine cylinders ate Of 274 im, 43 m1. and 70° in, in diameter respectively, with a stroke of 39 in. Steam is supplied at a working pressure of 180 lb. from four boilers of the cylindrical type, 15 ft. in diame- ter. Two of these are double-ended, being 21 ft. long, and 2 single-ended 11 ft. long. The boilers are fitted with furnaces of the Morrison suspension type, and work with the Howden sys- tem for forced draft, the air being supplied by three fans driven by en- closed forced lubrication engines. The main condensers are cylindrical 'in form, and independent twin-air pumps are provided. There is also an aux- iliary condenser capable of dealing with the whole of the steam from the New Creosote Tank Steamer H.C. Henry NEW tank steamer designed primarily for carrying creo- sote in bulk has been built recently 'by the Pacific Creo- soting Co. of Seattle and has been placed in regular service carrying creosote from European ports to the company's creosoting works at Eagle Harbon near Seattle. Previously the THE Marine REVIEW auxiliary engines, and having separate air pumps. Special Arrangement of Pumping Plant. Special arrangements have been made in connection with the pumping plant, owing to the special duty of the ship in the ice-floes. In the event of the ordinary suction or discharge valves being choked with ice, the circulating 'water may be drawn from or discharged into a part of the double bottom, two frame-spaces being specially divided off for this purpose. In the way of these the outer skin of the ship is perforated in such a manner as to give a large area for the passage of the circulating water. Steam jets are arranged on the branches of all sea inlet valves, to enable them to be cleared of ice as occasion arises. A ballast pump of the centrifugal type, capable, as already stated, of dealing with 250 tons of By H. Cote Estep. company had imported its creosote in drums, there being practically none of domestic manufacture available on the Pacific coast. This was an in- convenient and unsatisfactory method and there was always some loss by leakage and more or less damage to the packages. Recently also a ruling has been made requiring the payment November, 1909 water per hour, is fitted in the engine room, with connections for transfer- ring water between the forward and aft tanks when trimming the vessel for making its way through the ice. In addition to the usual feed, bilge, and sanitary pumps, the machinery de- partment is fitted with evaporating plant, grease-extractor, feed heater, and Stone's ash-expellers, the equipment generally embodying the latest up-to- date practice for this class of vessel. A work shop for repairing purposes is also installed on the vessel, the lathes and other machines being driven by electric motor. The ship and machinery have been built to the requirements of the British' board of trade, Lloyds Registry of Shipping and the Canadian steamboat inspection act, under the supervision of Charles Duguid, naval architect, Can- adian department of marine and fish- eries, and T.
