Hoyt, which Stranded on Outer Island, Lake Su- Perior, last fall, is practically a new ship, having been lengthened 48 ft. as well as undergoing complete in- terior rebuilding, substituting the arch construction in place of the main deck beams and hold stanchions. The sheer Strake and spar deck were strength- ened by putting a doubling plate two- thirds the length of the ship. Seventy- Six plates were taken off the bottom and about 175 bottom frames were cut and straightened. The whole tank top was also taken off, rerolled and Put back. The tank top stiffeners were reinforced with plate. The in- termediate stiffeners were also rein- forced to resist the abuse which the tank top receives from the unloading machines. Considerable repairs were also made to the machinery and boil- *fs on account of the stranding, and' altogether the James H. Hoyt, the first vessel on the lakes to be con- structed with hatches spaced 12 ft. centers, is a new ship. SAN JUAN NAVIGATION CO. The San Juan Navigation Co., the newly organized steamship company, has inaugurated the first daylight ser- vice from Seattle to the San Juan Is- lands in upper Puget Sound. The company has purchased the Burton from the Kitsap County Transporta- tion Co., and will run her under the command of Capt. Chas. Basford, for- merly master of the Islander. Along charter has been taken on the steamer Vashonian, owned ,by the Vashon Steamship Co., the Vashonian being in command of Capt. E. B. Jackson, formerly of the Kitsap County Trans- portation Co. The new company has been organized to meet the demand for a transportation concern to handle the mail contract in the San Juan Is- lands...
