August, 1912 THE MARINE REVIEW DasuL PATENT. OIL fires. If the oil is allewed to get too hot, over 200 F., gas will accumulate in the oil line causing the fires to burn unsteady and flicker. To over- come this, open the valve at the end of the oil line slightly for a few sec- cnds to allow the oil to circulate back to the suction and allow the gas to escape. Union Iron Works Co. has made of the Dahl system during 1911 and. 1912, od Dredger for Burma Wim Simons.' €° > Go., daXtenirew, launched from their yard last month the dredger Campbell, built to the order of the Indian government for the improvement of the waterways in Burma. This dredger, which is of the "Simons" suction reclamation type, has been specially designed and con- -structed under the direction of Prof. J. H. Biles, naval architect and con- sulting engineer to the India office. The Campbell is a twin-screw light- draught cutter dredger and will work in conjunction with a floating pipe line and terminal pontoon, arranged for delivering dredged material over river or canal banks for land reclama- tion. The dredging pump is driven by an independent set of triple-expansion engines and the suction pipe is car- ried on a frame fitted in well at for- ward part of vessel. The lower end of suction frame is fitted with a steel spiral rotary cutter, driven by cast steel machine cut gearing from a set of horizontal compound engines placed on deck. The gearing and cutter are of ample strength to stall the engines when working at full power. Independent steam hoist gear is provided for. controlling the suc- tion frame, and very powerful ma- neuvering winches are placed at each BURNER end of the vessel. An operating house is provided on upper deck containing all necessary levers and _ telegraphs to enable one man to have complete control of the dredging operations. The dredger is propelled by twin screws, each driven by a set of triple- expansion engines. Steam is supplied by two cylindrical multitubular boil- 261 ers, constructed to Lloyds require- ments for a working pressure of 160 lb. The boilers are fitted with How- den's forced draft for burning Indian fuel. A complete installation of con- densing plant capable of dealing with exhaust steam from all the engines in the vessel at one time, independent automatic feed pumps, bilge pumps, service pumps, pressure pumps, filters and all the other usual auxiliaries for a vessel of this tye, are provided in engine room. A <fepair (shop with electrically-driven machine tools cap- able of overtaking minor repairs, is fitted on board. Electric light instal- lation is provided both above and be- low deck. The vessel is provided with every accommodation necessary for a crew working in a hot climate. The contract for converting the six- masted steel schooner William L. Douglass, which was sold recently by the Coastwise Transportation Co. to the Sun Co., Philadelphia, into an oil- carrying barge, has been awarded to . Cramps, Philadelphia.
