eT 7) ° Kise os ----z80" THE MARINE REVIEW ing clear around the inside of the dock from the top of one wing across the floor to the top of the opposite wing. A similar row of bolts also, runs down the outside of each wing. Across the bottom there are six 5- in. bolts equidistantly spaced; they are accessible from the inside of the pontoons and pass through watertight stuffing boxes. This system of con- nections unites the sections into one compact unit. The design, however, is such that no great strain comes on the bolts at any time, since each section takes care of its own load and acts independently of its neighbors, hy- draulically as well as mechanically. The pontoons have a molded depth March, 1913 high inside, from the floor of the dock, and the side walls are therefore 28 ft. in height from the upper deck to the turn of the bilge. The wings are 6 ft. wide on top and 9 ft. at the bottom; the dock is therefore 76 ft, wide inside on top and 70 ft. wide at the keel blocks. There are three watertight fore-and-aft bulkheads in each section, located as indicated in Fig. 2 and also one transverse bulk- head, thus dividing each section into eight watertight compartments. The general features of the framing and plating are clearly indicated in Fig. 2. The transverse framing of the pontoons consists of 5 x 3-in., 9.8-Ib, double angles; the main frames in the Oo he} ees oO Bao" (ono QUO Oo Quo 0 o OO Ollo 9 GIG 9 ollo ao ----31t 6" launched separately.
