336 in the United States have progressed splendidly. . "Canada, however, has discounted the prosperity of her own citizens by admitting to full privileges of the coastwise trade at least 34 American- built vessels now in active operation between Canadian ports while, nom- inally, Canadian coastwise shipping is * THE MARINE REVIEW protected, oceanic privileges have been granted to Norwegian and other vessels, while American vessels are permitted periodically to appropriate what they can of the lake trade." The present system of bonuses for ship building in Canada was founded on the requirements of the days of cheap wooden vessels so that a maxi- September, 1914 mum amount of $1.15 per gross ton is all the builders receive from the public treasury. Against this negligible amount they face free trade in Brit- ish-built ships and are obliged to pay about 68 per cent higher wages than British and Irish private-owned yards and from 70 to 80 per cent higher than British government dockyards. Battleship Nevada The Latest Dreadnaught of the American Navy is HE battleship Nevada was launched from the yard of the Fore River 'Ship Building Corporation, Quin- cy, Mass., on July 11, being christened by Miss Eleanor Anne Siebert, the ten-year- old niece of Gov. Oddie of Nevada. The battleship Nevada and her sister ship the Oklahoma are 500 tons larger than their immediate predecessors the New York and Texas. The principal dimensions are: Length overall ...583 feet mea oe 95 feet 25% inches Mean draft. 2.07%; 28 feet 6 inches On this draft the displacement will be 27,500 tons. The Nevada will be driven by Curtis marine turbines. The boilers will be fired exclusively with oil and the ves- sel will carry no coal. The estimated speed is 20%4 knots but it is probable that this will be considerably exceeded. Uhe atmor and armament. of the Nevada are considerably in excess of any of her predecessors and involves a new departure for the United States navy im the arrangement of the main battery of 14-inch guns. This battery is JOSEPHUS DANIELS, SECRETARY OF THE NAVY; MISS SIEBERT AND GOV Launched at Fore River THE BATTLESHIP NEVADA IMMEDIATELY AFTER LAUNCHING arranged in four turrets, two. turrets having two guns each and two turrets, No. 1 and No. 4 respectively carrying three guns each. This arrangement will give a concentration of fire superior to that obtainable from the ten 14-inch guns of the New York and Texas which are mounted in five 2-gun turrets. The new 14-inch 45-calibre gun is a far more powerful weapon than the 45-calibre 12-inch gun mounted on the Delaware and North Dakota. The muzzle energy of the 12-inch gun is about 49,000 foot tons whereas that of the 14-inch gun is TASKER LOWNDES ODDIE, OF NEVADA about 66,000 foot tons. Moreover its shell, which weighs 1,400 pounds as compared with the 870-pound weight of the 12-inch carries a much larger burst- ing charge of high explosives and, therefore, will be proportionally more destructive. The principal interest in this new ship lies in its great defensive power, not only will it carry a much greater weight of armor than has been carried or is to be carried by any ships built or build- ing, but the armor will be disposed to. greater advantage. The belt armor, or that which protects the waterline, will be 1714 feet wide and at nvean draft will extend from 9 feet above to 8 feet 6 inches below the water. It will -be 131%4 inches thick and will extend for a length of 400 feet along each side. There will be two protective decks, the lower one 114 inch thick on the flat and 2 inches on the slope. The gun deck, which is really.an upper protec- tive deck will be 3 inches thick, these two decks providing an excellent pro- tection against plunging fire and also against fragments of shells which might be exploded in passing through the ship's plating in wake of the gun deck. The armor of the barbette will be 13 inches thick and the armor of the two gun turrets will be 16 inches thick on the face and 18 inches thick on the three gun turrets, the sides being 9 inches and 10 inches thick, while the roof is 5 inches thick.
