February, 1918 THE'MARINE. REVIEW Due to the fluid condition of the metal in oxy-acetylene welding, it is necessary to keep the surface of the weld hori- zontal. For this purpose the cradle shown at the top of the page was devised at the Norfolk navy yard for welding cir- cumferential cracks in cylinders. Large. oxy-acetylene welds also must be preheated using rigging such as that shown below. The thoroughness with which the repair. work was executed is indicated by these illustrations. The cradle shown above was specially designed to handle the large cylinders of the German steamers. It not only served the convenience of the welders, but insured the efficiency of the work. Special care was exercised in preheating the castings for oxy-acetylene welding. cm wn
