Great Lakes to Have New recker Craft is Complete in Every Detail and is Named and De- signed After the Original Vessel Now in Foreign Waters HEN the United States govern- W ment took over the Great Lakes wrecking steamer FAVORITE, late in 1917, for use in foreign waters, her owner, the Great Lakes Towing Co., immediately made plans features of the old vessel with many improvements. Capt. Alex Cunning, master of the old Favortre will command the new craft while James Callahan, who also served on the old vessel, will have charge of her machinery. The new Favorite is probably one of the staunchest vessels ever built on the lakes and as part of her work may include ice breaking, she has been rein- forced' extra strong. ~Her shell plating is of double thickness, being of 3£-inch steel plates while reinforcing frames are spaced every 10 inches. She is an_all-steel flush-deck vessel 173 feet long, 40 feet beam, 16 feet molded depth and her draft in ordinary trim is 7 feet 6 inches forward, 12 feet 6 inches aft. By the aid of water ballast she can be trimmed to an event draft of 9 feet 6 inches. Her equipment is complete in every FAVORITE COMPLETELY OUTFITTED AND READY TO GO IN COMMISSION pendent. Her boilers, three in num- ber, are placed fore and aft and were designed by the Great Lakes Towing Co. that each boiler has an inde- pendent stack, all three stacks running up through a single 8-foot funnel. This arrange- ment gives each boiler the 'advantage of an independent draft while the free space inside the funnel assures bet- ter ventilation of the fire room. Just aft of the engine room, in the 'tween decks, is located the machine and black- smith shop. The machine - shop. equipment consists of a power bolt and pipe cutting machine, which will accom- modate pipe up to 4 inches and bolts up to 2% inches; 18-inch engine lathe, with 8- foot bed; 24-inch crank shaper, drill press, grinding wheel stand, power hack saw and circular saw mill for cutting up lumber. The ma- chine shop also accommo- dates the lighting plant which is divided into four units.
