May, 1919 a MARINE REVIEW 239 tanks and burners for various-purposes. Her deck equipment was especially designed to mect the exacting require- ments of a craft of this kind. Located above the pilot house is a 35-ton loco- motive-type crane, without .trucks. This crane has ample. power, for. han- dling a 3-ton ore bucket, and has about double the capacity of that on the old steamer. This feature is of especial importance ~ in 'lightering stranded craft which are loaded with ore. A separate dynamo furnishes light for the crane and boom for night work. As this crane serves the whole forward deck, it can be. utilized for a diversity of wrecking operations. The FavorirE carries two patent anchors weighing 4000 pounds each which are controlled by a steam wind- lass on the forward deck. Two thou- sand feet of. 134-inch. stud anchor chain are provided.- Aft of the wind- FRONT AND REAR VIEWS OF THE RETURN TUBULAR MARINE-TYPE BOILERS INSTALLED IN THE FAVORITE / lass. is. located two steam mooring engines equipped with wire mooring lines. On the after deck is located a steam capstan, towing machine and a stiff- legged type 5-ton crane. This crane serves the after deck as well as the machine shop, which is provided with a liberal sized hatch for handling material. This crane also serves the life boat located on the top of the deck house. The towing engine is designed to meet the requirements of a vessel of this type and is equipped with 1200 feet of 2-inch wire cable. The towing bitts are located near the towing engine and are made in the form of a solid steel casting. The steering apparatus is of the steam-hydraulic direct-acting type and was designed by the Great Lakes FORWARD DECK SHOWING WINDLASS AND ONE OF THE MOORING MACHINES BOTH OF WHICH - ARE OPERATED BY STEAM It is located rear the after-peak bulk- head, under the main deck. The tiller is a steel forging and swings just above deck, being connected to the steering apparatus by means of tiller chains and compensating springs. The cylinders on the steerer are 6x16 inches in diameter with 6-foot stroke. The wrecking equipment is complete in every respect and was selected from experience gained through many years of practical wrecking operations. Steam pumps ranging in size from 4 to 16-inch suction form an important part of this outfit. This pump equip- ment includes all necessary fittings. Other wrecking equipment includes 30 hydraulic jacks of 100-ton capacity, each with hutchicks and all necessary fittings; two portable air compressors, three diving outfits and a complete submarine clectric light outfit. The vessel also carries a full assortment of ship chandler's stores. Living quarters for the crew are Towing Co. It is the type of steerer AFTER DECK SHOWING LARGE TOWING BETTS FORWARD OF WHICH IS THE TOWING MACHINE-- used on all the company's tow boats. STEAM CAPSTAN IS ON THE PORT SIDE
