May, 1919 gearing. The main bevel gear is ap- proximately as large as the click while the pinion is hardened and_ provided with a bearing on each side. Motion of the table is controlled by a disk-type clutch. The cross rail is heavily proportioned with the elevating screw adjacent to the guides. The screw for the longi- tudinal motion of the saddle is located between the two lower tracks, which is said to make it impossible for the saddle to cramp under heavy feeding strains. The cross rail is elevated and lowered by power. The side head is mounted directly on the column with but two joints be- tween the cutting tool and the column. It extends across the column and _ has a bearing on the left-hand housing which permits of all strains being taken on the full width of the column. The bearings are of the square lock type. The side-head turret is steel, hardened and ground to insure accuracy. The various positions are controlled by two large keys which. engage slots in the turret, one above and the other below the. center. of, rotation. ©. Clamiping «is by an eccentric binder. The tool seats are made integral with the turret. The vertical head is mounted on the cross rail. with bearings of the square- lock type. The slide can be swiveled in either direction to an angle of 30 de- grees from the vertical. To facilitate close settings, graduations are provided on both sides of the swivel. The swivel is adjusted through the medium of worm gearing. Binders are provided for clamping the saddle to the cfoss rail and the turret slide to the swivel. Four bolts are provided for fastening the: swivel at any angle to the saddle. The turret has a large bearing sur- face and is mounted at an angle from the vertical to provide clearance in swinging large tools over the _ slide. The turret-lock bolts and index ring are hardened and ground. The turret can be indexed half way between each of the regular positions of the five tool holders. This permits two tools to op- erate simultaneously on the same plane or on planes of different heights. The speed-change unit is of the selective sliding gear type. Two levers are provided which operate 12 speeds. When the starting lever is engaged, the speed-change levers are locked. au- tomatically. Rapid power traverse is provided in horizontal and vertical di- rections for both the side and vertical heads. Each head has 16 feeds. The feeds and traverse are controlled by three levers at the end of -the cross rail and three on the front of the side head. Observation scales, graduated in frac- tional parts of one inch, are provided for the vertical and horizontal feeds of the vertical head and for the side head .slide. Hand wheels for fine ad- justments are equipped with micrometer dials. With the side head in working posi- tion, the machine will accommodate work up.to 38 inches in diameter. The side head can be lowered below the table if desired and by this arrangement work up to 44 inches in diameter can be swung clear of the column and fin- ished all over with the vertical head. In marine machine shops, this tool is particularly adapted for finishing such work as pistons, cylinder heads, piston rings, glands, couplings, eccentrics, ec- centric straps and similar parts, Submarine Signaling Device In a transmitting device for sub- marine signals recently patented in Germany, a receiver, secured to the outer layer of the ship's hull from inside, is filled with water and so ar- ranged that the liquid is in contact THE MARINE' REVIEW 261 ag NS SS CROSS SECTION OF TRANSMITTING DEVICE with the outer plating of the vessel. Whereas in the usual arrangement the sounds are produced by a bell and a multiplying device arranged inside the water-tank or receiver, the essential point in the new device is that the means for producing the sound (bell, or the like) are placed externally on the wall of the liquid tank, the liquid making direct contact with the outer surface.
