May, 1919 accommodate both types of dies. The dies are easily removed. Steel for Chisels Pneumatic-hammer tools such as chisels, snaps and beading tools are put to severe use in shipyards. A new steel for this hard service has recently been developed by the Ludlum Steel Co.,: Waterviret, (N.Y. -iiis etec ay is claimed, will not break under the head or at the fillet, and is said to be particularly adapted for cutting out scuppers on the sides of ships which is one of the most severe usages to which cape chisels can be put. Cape chisels made of this steel actually can be bent in use without breaking. Open-Side Crank Planer For . surfacing a variety "of -com- paratively small units entering into marine construction, the crank planer has long been recognized as an: effi- 'cient machine tool, owing to the fact that it can be worked to maximum capacity without chattering while tak- ing heavy cuts. The machine shown in the accom- panying illustration is a type of crank planer recently developed by the Lynd- Farquhar Co., Boston. The object of the design was to combine the salient features of two standard machine tools;. the shaper: and crank planer. The bed is a box casting on which the platen travels. The column which carries the cross rail is securely bolted and doweled to the bed. The open- side design permits the machine to handle work that ordinarily would not pass between the housings of a standard type machine. It is pointed out that all the operat- ing handles on the machine are within ready reach of the operator while he is in a working position. When using the vertical feed in conjunction with the longitudinal feed, both operating handles are close together. The platen is provided with six speeds, three of which are derived by a gear shift lever while the remaining three are obtained by throwing in. the back gears by means of a controlling lever. The crank': arm "is actuated through the medium of a large steel bull gear which in turn is driven by gearing on the pulley shaft. The platen is readily positioned for clearance at the ends of the cutting stroke by a screw which runs through the 'driving nut. This driving nut is SHAPER connected to the crank arm through the medium of a connecting link. All working surfaces are gibbed to allow adjustment for wear. The feed crank is adjustable for different feeds and. operates the feed screws through the medium of a shaft and rack. The cross rail is provided with a counter- weight to insure easy manipulation when raising or lowering.
