New York Traffic Clearances at the port of New York curing May were smaller than the average for the first five months of the current. year. Furthermore the shortage of cargoes and the difficulties of obtaining bunker, . resulting labor difficulties and the railroad strike, held a number of ships in port. The entrances during the month set a record for the year, conclusively prov- ing that despite the port troubles the importance of New York as a shipping center' has not yet been jeopardized. The longshoremen's" strike did not begin to tie up shipping at Philadelphia until the last of May. During the month, about one-third of the tonnage enter- ing the port of Philadelphia came in ballast, and about one-fourth of the PHILADELPHIA PORT TRAFFIC 1920 (Exclusive of domestic) --Entrances-- --Clearances-- No. Net No. Net Month ships tonnage __ ships tonnage JAMAL con ce ee 59 139,941 67 199,396 Pepeuary.. si sce 67 184,753 72 230,766 WMarehx< 2.5655. 91 223,082 65 171,724 SUN ee es cc cae 88 205,694 89 237,730 Maye eee 116 284,315 119 338,366 clearances were in ballast.
